Freeze Dried Candy FAQ

How does freeze drying work?

Freeze dryers work by freezing the material, then reducing the pressure and adding heat to allow the frozen water in the material to change directly to a vapor (sublimate).

What is special about freeze dried candy?

Freeze-dried candy tastes sweeter and richer than the original, as they are more concentrated due to the loss of water natural in freeze-drying. The candy may puff up or “explode” and no longer look like the original. The benefit of freeze-drying your candy is that it makes your candies taste even better than before.

What's the difference between freeze dried candy and regular candy?

Freeze-dried candy is a new form of preservation method where sweet or sour treats are frozen. This method doesn't affect the food value but makes it more flavourful and faster rehydration process. What is this? This freezing of treats also has a longer shelf life and stays good for as long as 25 years.

Does freeze dried candy have to be refrigerated?

Does It Need To Be Refrigerated? Because the word freeze is used in freeze-dried food, some may think that once preserved, freeze-dried foods have to remain frozen—this is not true. You can keep freeze-dried foods at room temperature. Once the freeze-drying process finishes, there is no more need to keep them cold.

Can you freeze dry candy like Skittles?

There's no real reason to preserve Skittles for long-term storage, but freeze drying them makes them crunchy instead of chewy. The flavour is even more intense, and you don't have that stick-to-your-teeth sensation.

Can you freeze dry chocolate?

While chocolate can be difficult to freeze dry, it is still possible to freeze dry candy that contains some chocolate. Milk Duds and Junior Mints are both chocolate-coated candy that many people love when freeze dried.

Why do things puff up when freeze-dried?

If you happen to have access to a freeze dryer one of our favorite things to do is freeze dry gummy bears. The pressure causes the sugars and gelatin to puff into an amazingly light and crispy puffed candy.
